CDBurn supports a wide range of both CD-R and CD-R/W drives. Support for new drives is added constantly to keep up with the fast-moving drives market.
However, your best bet might be to buy a drive/CDBurn bundle from one of the RISC OS dealers. It will save you a lot of hassle, and the dealer will have tested the drive before for CDBurn compatibility.
There are different drive classes for use with CDBurn. Some drives are fully supported, some are only partly supported, and some are not supported at all. Sometimes, there are OEM versions of drives available under a different brand name, or there were slight variations of a drive model available. These drives are grouped under probably supported - if you have such a drive, please contact me. The same goes for the drives under the unknown label.
The following compatibility table should help you to answer all your questions concerning working combinations.
Update! The latest CDBurn version (1.59 and later) now features a configurable MMC driver. See the CDBurn support page for more information, and subscribe to the Smartgroups mailing list.
A set of drivers will become available here soon.
All these drives are fully tested and are used widely by customers.

(*) Unfortunately, the Plextor PX-W1210A does not work on the Risc PC internal IDE and on the Simtec IDE podule, it does however work on the APDL ideA podule. Other hosts (e.g. RiscStation or Mico) were not tested.
(**) Both the Yamaha CRW8424 and CRW8824 give problems when trying to be used as CDFS drives. Most CDFSSoftSCSI2 drivers I tried were not able to drive those devices successfully. Castle Technology know about the problem and should have a compatible driver by now.
These drives should really work, as they are either variants of another, fully supported drive, or they should conform to the MMC standard.
There are quite a lot of IDE drives that should either work out of the box or with minimal changes in CDBurn. If you intend to buy an IDE drive, please contact me.

These drives have been tested either by us or by customers and sort-of work. However, no proper documentation is available for those drives, so it is unlikely that these will ever be fully supported. Only buy one of those drives if you are sure that you will never need the missing features. However, if you already own such a drive, buying CDBurn might still be worthwhile.

(*) The Yamaha CRW8824E is a strange device. While it was recognized on the IDE bus, CDBurn was not able to write a CD successfully. The writing seems to go through without problems, but the end result is not readable at all.
The following devices have an unknown status. Availability is unclear, as well as compatibility with other devices.
